Structure Strong Earthquake Monitoring System

Taiwan is located on the seismic belt and is prone to frequent earthquake. With the population growth and increasing high buildings and bridges, the earthquake-proof capabilities and design of structures become more and more important on a daily basis. Therefore, the structure-related earthquake reaction monitoring in the strong earthquake observation and monitoring plan is to install structure strong earthquake system in different structures and record related data for the research of the academic and engineering circles to work out the safe, economic and proper earthquake-proof design norms for architectural structures and bridges in Taiwan. The CWB structure monitoring system is composed of three parts: sensors, cables, and recording machine, which can be further divided into industrial computer and signal conditional box. According to characteristics of different buildings and bridges, each structure strong earthquake monitoring system can be connected with 30 or 60 recording channels. To cover structures of different functions and characteristics, the selection of station shall follow the principles as below:

I. characteristics of the ground and soil on which the structure is located: 1.weak and soft 2.medium 3.hard.

II. Structure vibration cycle:

  • Low building Low building (vibration cycle < 0.5 seconds)
  • Medium-height building Medium-height building (vibration cycle 0.5 second ~ 1.5seconds)
  • High building High building (vibration cycle > 1.5 seconds)

III. Non-structural factors: take into consideration the functions of the building such as school, hospital and communications facilities. In such cases, the applications of the recorded data shall be more extensive.
